You had a chance to meet your idols, Rascal Flatts. How did you keep from being star struck?

Yes, that was incredible! In the beginning I was star struck by everybody I met. And then you get to where you learn that they are just people and they like to be treated as people more than they like to be treated as stars, and so I felt the more I went through, that’s how it became. When I met Rascal Flatts, I was still pretty excited! But I tried to keep my cool and everything. I got to take a picture with them all and getting to talk to them, they are really nice guys.



What did you learn most from the celebrity mentors on the show?

The mentors have taught you to put yourself into your song, don’t just sing the song; believe the song, because if you believe it, than the audience is going to believe it.



Was it an advantage to have your mom with you throughout the rehearsals and shows? Did this experience bring you closer?

My mom is always there and I can always talk to her about anything. Everybody always says, “The love a mother has for her son,” but there really is a deep connection between me and my mom. I’m very close to her and she is definitely my best friend and I’m just so glad I got to take her on this incredible journey.



Do you have a special keepsake from your time on Idol?

Gibson had given us all guitars and, I mean, that is something I can take home. Also, the memory from this competition, the memory of the friends I made, the chance to perform on the American Idol stage, to perform before 25 million people, that is something I can also take away as a keepsake that I will always have, forever, to look back on.



You’re regarded as the Yoda figure on Idol. Did you impart wisdom to your fellow contestants?

We all keep each other very grounded and it’s nice to have each other there to just talk to. I’m not sure what I taught them! But … I hope I left a good mark. Once you are here and you are in this bubble, you have no one else to talk to, and these contestants are all you’ve got right now, and it’s so good to be close with them. When you look back, you don’t want to be like, “I had no friends on that show.” You want to look back and say, “I loved everybody here.”



After Andrew Garcia left, who did the best Yoda impression?

Siobhan was actually the best Yoda, then Big Mike. Well, Big Mike, he’s the one who started it, so he is always the one that does the best with it!


What will your future album sound like?

When I come out with an album, I would love to write some of the songs on it. Since we’re not allowed to perform originals on the show, I would love to perform and record them so America can hear the style of music and the things in my life through song and hear the things special to me. Country music is what I feel I fit most comfortably with.

He has great tone to his voice and he’s even starting to lose that stupid country twang that he had in the beginning. Love the Kris Allen twist he threw on it toward the end (which, by the way, might be the best cover of this song I’ve ever heard). Nice touch. Made it more acoustic than the original. On the downside, it took some of the soul out of it. Still, one of the top performances of the night.

On Tuesday, March 23, Aaron Kelly pounded out a performance of Aerosmith’s "I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing" in spite of some difficulties he was experiencing with his voice earlier that week. This performance impressed the judges, and impressed the fans that vote for Aaron week after week. Because of his strong fan base, he landed in the Top 10 on American Idol, earning him a spot on the upcoming tour.




But in his hometown of Sonestown, Pa., Aaron is already considered a winner!

So Aaron's turning 17 soon (April 2..that's next week!) and I'm sure he loves receiving fan mail...so why don't all of fans gather to make one big birthday project for him?




Basically...I'm thinking of making a scrapbook for Aaron's birthday and we can all collaborate to make it together. You can make it on the computer or you can send it to me by mail (although you might not get it to me in time...so I suggest e-mailing me your part). It'll be a basic 8.5x11 sized book that I'll hole punch and string together. I have printers at my school...so decorate your page with whatever you wish! I've thought for a while that Aaron Kelly might be one of the contestants to most benefit by being forced into theme weeks. It seems to have worked for him this week -- his version of Angie is sweet, tender and just the right amount of sad. And there's just the tiniest bit of rasp at the end of his phrases. Now that he's not having to try to sing like Rascal Flatts' Gary LeVox or Lonestar's Richie McDonald, his own voice gets to shine through. That was pretty cool.

Sixteen-year-old Aaron, who hails from from Sonestown, Pennsylvania (where there are only about 50 houses, y’all!) ends up sounding like O-Town covering the Rolling Stones. But you know what? We’ll take it. The kiddo’s got star quality that Tim Urban and Andrew Garcia only wish they possessed half of. In his interviews he comes across as an “aw, shucks” shy guy, but when he’s on stage, Kelly really comes alive. Ellen correctly points out that Aaron and Siobhan gave the two performances that stand out for the evening. Simon adds that the teenager “absolutely 100% chose the right song.”

On March 11, American Idol revealed the season's Top 12 finalists. Among those finalists was Sonestown, Pa.'s Aaron Kelly, a 16-year-old whose story of a struggling childhood won over the hearts of judges during audition week last summer in Orlando, Fla.




And Kelly has been stirring a buzz in his small hometown of Sonestown, Pa., where many of the locals already familiarized themselves with Kelly's stage presence at area events such as the Troy Fair in 2008, and performances at the Bloomsburg Fair for two of the past three years.
